Rivian has confirmed that it will be introducing the R2 electric SUV in the UK in 2027. The American brand will kick off its operations in the UK with this model, primarily competing with the Tesla Model Y.

Rivian R2 Design

In terms of design, the Rivian R2 features a blocky yet clean aesthetic, similar to its siblings, the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV. In an official release, the company’s Chief Design Officer, Jeff Hammoud, stated, “We designed the R2 by balancing form with function, while building on our inviting and iconic design language.”

A common thread seen in its elder siblings is the vertical ‘stadium’ headlight design, connected by a thick bar stretched across the width of the car at the front. A similar setup can be observed at the back as well.

Rivian R2 Interior

The R1T and R1S were celebrated for their environmental friendliness, with elements made from sustainable materials. The R2 features textiles and surfaces that, according to the company, are easy to clean. Rivian has prioritized rear legroom with long journeys in mind, stretching the wheelbase by 45mm more than the Model Y, to 2,935mm. However, it should be noted that, while the R2 measures 4,715mm in total length, the Model Y is slightly longer at 4,751mm.

Rivian is known for adding interesting features to its cars. The R2 includes a torch in the driver’s door, and all windows, including the rear quarter windows, can be completely rolled down for an open-air experience. Additionally, all of the car’s seats can be completely folded down for more cargo space. If that’s not enough, there’s also a front trunk (frunk) that can accommodate some bags.

Rivian R2 Engine and Platform

Underpinning the R2 is a brand-new platform designed with performance, range, and cost efficiency in mind. The battery, situated on the floor, is capable of providing a range of 340 miles on a single charge. The car can also be charged up to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

Rivian is offering three drivetrain setups with the car: single-, dual-, and tri-motor options. The triple-motor setup employs two motors at the rear and one at the front. While exact output figures have not been disclosed, it is known that the car can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in less than 3.2 seconds, outperforming both the Tesla Model Y Performance and the 577bhp Kia EV6 GT in a straight line.

Rivian R2 Technology

Rivian is also focusing heavily on autonomous driving features, with 11 cameras and five radars supporting the suite. Like its elder siblings, the car will also receive over-the-air updates. The R2 will be launched with a price tag of $45,000 in the US, but the first examples won’t reach UK shores until 2027.

Summary

Rivian’s R2 electric SUV is set to debut in the UK in 2027, marking the brand’s British entry against competitors like the Tesla Model Y. Featuring a blocky, clean design with its iconic ‘stadium’ headlights, the R2 emphasizes eco-friendly materials, ample rear legroom, and a host of innovative features including a door torch and fully lowerable windows for an airy cabin experience. Built on a new platform, it promises a 340-mile range, fast charging, and options for single to tri-motor setups, ensuring a swift 0-62mph in under 3.2 seconds.
