The Ford RS200 and Escort is Coming Back Soon – Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Earlier this year, we saw Ford registering the name RS200 with the EU Intellectual Property Office. It brought us to the edge of our seats at the time before we eventually forgot about it. We know car manufacturers filing trademarks is an old practice, just in case. However, we think there is no need for speculations anymore considering that the RS200 might actually be making a comeback.

For the unaware, the RS200 was a massively popular car that was introduced for the insane Group B rally in the 1980s. It was a mid-engined, composite-bodied 4WD coupe that ran with a 1.8-litre turbocharged Cosworth four-cylinder engine. In its rally gown, it put out 444bhp and the homologation meant Ford had to manufacture somewhere between 140 and 150 examples between 1984 and 1986. The road-going versions were capable of an admirable 250bhp. And if you are anything like us, scrolling through used cars for fun, you will know that they are among the most sought-after cars these days.

This time around, the revival is in the hands of Boreham Motorworks, with the official blessings from the American giant. And a nugget fact, Boreham was also once the Essex home of Ford’s rally team. We visited the specialist’s website to see if we could dig up anything more only to be disappointed. Not much else is known about the car. We can’t help but wonder whether it will be true to the original of a hopped-up resto-mod style car, similar to what we saw with the Kimera’s Evo37 and 38. We see some LED treatment in the teaser pictures, forcing us to guess it could be the latter.

Ford Mk1 Escort

Interestingly, it is not just the rally car that will be revived by Boreham, but also the ever-popular Mk1 Escort, built to Group 5 Rally specs. We expect this to arrive before the RS200 with a scheduled reveal sometime later this year. We know that each of these cars will be built in “very limited numbers” and go out with a steep price tag. Ownership of either of them will also grant you access to Boreham’s High Performance Club which will organise driving experiences for a lucky few.

You will be happy to know that the RS200 and the Escort are just two of the seven classic Ford cars that Boreham plans to revive in the coming years.
