Lewis Hamilton Ferrari Switch Explained: Unpacking the Impact on F1
6 min readF1 premier Lewis Hamilton has announced a shock switch to Ferrari for the upcoming 2025 season. Considering that this news comes before the W15 wheels even turn this season, it deservedly begs a lot of questions. More importantly, we are yet to find out if this is the beginning of an imminent domino effect, that will categorically reel in popular talents across the grid. For starters, there are essentially two ways one can look at this early announcement. Hamilton’s complete loss of faith in the team does not come as a surprise and this acts as a foundation for the two views. One can either view this as a solid kick in the shin for Mercedes or a respectable step to give the company plenty of time to carefully make a decision.
This switch essentially has a lot of moving parts, and we need to get into the nuts and bolts of it to understand what it means for other teams as well as racers in the upcoming seasons.
The Empty Seat at Mercedes-AMG
Once the woahs and wows settle, the empty seat at Mercedes is the next big topic. While the move was a surprise even for the folks in Germany, Mercedes has a few options that it could ponder on. Starting with…
Carlos Sainz
A straight swap makes absolute sense for a lot of reasons. Carlos Sainz stood as the only racer apart from Max Verstappen to win a race in the last season. Adding to the list is also his diverse experience having raced for multiple teams on the grid. His performance last year only showed that he is still growing as a driver and has immense potential in a good reliable car. Sainz can be counted among the drivers who can give valuable feedback for better development of the racecar, which is something that Mercedes could really be helped with.
Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso comes in as a strong contender as well. Mercedes is currently trying to claw its way back to the top and could be expecting a driver with the most experience on the grid. Hence, the 42-year-old Spaniard is the knight in shining armor for Mercedes. Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin ends in 2024, which does add to the mix of motivation. But here’s the catch. Alonso, like Hamilton, is racing in his 40s now and might be looking for a multi-year contract with the team that he joins next. If a common ground is found in between, then why not? But considering that Mercedes was reluctant to give a multi-year contract to Lewis Hamilton, the racer that helped them dominate for seven straight seasons should raise some doubt.
Sebastian Vettel
We cannot overlook the possibility of Toto Wolff reaching out to Vettel for a multi-year contract. The German racer has more than just proved his capabilities having held several important records in the discipline. Furthermore, we could also link his return to Mercedes’ internal conversations that involve Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a junior racer who will race for the first time in F2 this year. If Antonelli manages to outperform expectations in his debut, he could be put in the sim while Vettel races and then take over when he retires (for good this time).
In addition to these, there are a few other racers on the grid with a fair chance at the seat. Starting with Esteban Ocon, who was the company’s reserve driver in 2019, moved to Alpine alongside Alonso the following year. However, his history of crashes with his own teammates does put a dent in his chances. Then there’s Daniel Ricciardo, who ticks all the right boxes for Mercedes. Ricciardo currently has a firm eye on the Redbull seat in 2025. However, if Sergio Perez gets a renewal, Ricciardo wouldn’t need much motivation to switch teams and onto a car that is very capable of having a shot at the title.
Insider Insights
Alongside Toto’s songs about the hunger for Hamilton’s 8th title was a disappointing contract that did not align with Hamilton’s goals. With the racer demanding a 3-year contract and the company providing just one, the two parties came to an agreement for a 1+1 year deal with an exit clause after the first year. This has been Hamilton’s way of an early exit in 2025. Hamilton has lately been seen fostering good relations with Ferrari chairman John Elkann. The only condition to make it more appealing than Mercedes’ offer was a multi-year deal. And considering the kind of love that he already has from Maranello, this certainly doesn’t feel like a bad option.
If the question is about this season, then Hamilton will be racing in the Mercedes (awkward). This means a good car from Mercedes this year might sow seeds of doubt for Hamilton about his future. We always believed that Hamilton would retire in a Mercedes. However, this move only sheds more light on how motivated Hamilton is to get that 8th title.
We could look forward to an exciting season in 2025 despite the bedding-in period for Hamilton in the new car. Ferrari race principal, Fred Vasseur has worked with Leclerc and Hamilton before this, and considering that the team made far fewer mistakes last year in comparison to 2022, Vasseur seems to have properly grounded his position in the company.
What About Charles Leclerc?
We are definitely expecting Ferrari executives to be stressing over this one. On one hand, they have the long-standing promise to Leclerc to give him his first championship victory, and on the other, a seasoned World Championship who essentially made the switch for a shot at the 8th title. While we are not expecting the car to be built around either of them, Hamilton still has to prove himself for the same. Nevertheless, we are extremely excited to see Leclerc and Hamilton fight alongside and against each other next year.
Summary
Lewis Hamilton’s shocking move to Ferrari for the 2025 season has stirred the F1 landscape, leaving Mercedes with a strategic dilemma and a vacant seat to fill. The transition opens potential doors for drivers like Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, and Sebastian Vettel, each bringing their unique strengths to the table. Amidst contract disputes and strategic career moves, Hamilton’s shift signifies more than just a team change; it’s a statement of intent for his 8th title. As the grid adjusts to this seismic shift, all eyes are on how Mercedes will respond and how dynamic duos like Hamilton and Leclerc will shape the future of F1 racing.
