The Geneva Motor Show 2024 is set to kick off tomorrow, on the 26th of February, for the first time in 5 years. For those unaware, the last time the event took place was in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic sent ripples across the industry. While we do rejoice in its return, there is a catch this time. This year around, the event has been significantly downsized to be a modest affair with just four major carmakers confirming to attend.

We are expecting some interesting unveilings at the show from Dacia, Renault, BYD, and MG. While the list does not end there, adding to it are a few other nameplates like Lucid. Hence, this article will get you up to speed with what’s about to come tomorrow.

BYD Seal U

BYD has been recently making frequent headlines for all the right reasons. The company has overtaken Volkswagen, selling more cars than the German titan in its home market of China. Since its arrival in the UK, the brand has already launched three models.

While the brand knows the target to be on Tesla’s back, it plans to establish its presence in the non-EV space with the Seal U, a plug-in hybrid that rivals the likes of Skoda Kodiaq and others. The brand has managed to grab unnecessary attention from the EV giant Tesla for being almost on-par with a much more enticing price tag. If they manage to continue with their pricing strategy, BYD will really be throwing a cat amongst the pigeons in the electrified family car segment.

Furthermore, we are also expecting the brand to use this occasion to introduce its Yangwang sub-brand to Europe. The first in line would be the U8 electric SUV that will lock horns with the likes of Land Rover Defender. While we wait on more concrete details about the car, we know that the party piece is the tank turn function that allows the huge off-roader to rotate on its axis by spinning the wheels in the opposite direction.

Dacia Springer

Dacia has managed to keep up with the constantly evolving car market in Europe. The brand has been making waves with its revamped lineup of value-focused cars. However, this year, we can expect a much-awaited public debut of its Spring electric car and along with it, the confirmation that it will be making its way to the UK as well.

In its new avatar, the Spring sports a fresh look, with Dacia stating that it has carried over only the roof from the previous version. The palette now has updated technology and a respectable 130-mile range. We are still in the dark when it comes to the pricing of the car but buyers can expect a tag around 16000 GBP, being evidently aimed at the masses.

Lucid Gravity

At the moment, Lucid does not sell any cars in the UK. But our folks in mainland Europe can expect some good news with the brand all set to launch the Gravity SUV at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show.

The Lucid Gravity is a full-size seven-seater SUV that boasts a range of 400 miles with a 120kWh battery. The jury is still out on whether the car has any chance of making it into the UK, but considering that it has made it to Europe, we can hope that the brand could be pondering over it.

MG 3

Among the list of all EVs, MG is planning to mark its presence with the petrol-powered MG3 supermini at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show. Ahead of this, we have caught glimpses of the car, but the company will unveil the car in the metal in the coming week.

The MG3 will arrive with an MG4-inspired look along with a heavily tech-laden interior. On offer is also an electrified powertrain option that the company is calling ‘Hybrid Plus’. Make sure you monitor this space for more updates on the car.

Renault 5

The Renault 5 is probably the most exciting reveal this year. The car garnered massive positive opinions after it was unveiled in its concept form a while back. The French carmaker has taken heavy inspirations from the original Renault 5. Who doesn’t like a good comeback, right?

The car will share its platform with models like the upcoming Renault 4 as well as the next-gen Micra and Leaf. Interested buyers can expect a range of over 200 miles on a single charge.

Summary

The Geneva Motor Show 2024 is gearing up to be an exciting event, marking its return after a five-year hiatus due to the pandemic. This year’s show is somewhat scaled-down but still manages some interesting propositions from Dacia, Renault, BYD, and MG. BYD is entering the hybrid sector with its Seal U model to take on the established players and plans to introduce its luxury Yangwang brand with the U8 electric SUV. Dacia plans to debut its Spring electric vehicle, offering an affordable option with a decent range. Lucid plans to unveil the Gravity, a full-size, seven-seater SUV, and MG aims to showcase the petrol-powered MG3 supermini, which will include a ‘Hybrid Plus’ powertrain option. The spotlight, however, is on the Renault 5, a modern take on a classic, combining nostalgia with the latest in electric vehicle technology, expected to share its platform with future models.
